In September 2023, Innovam teamed up with TIP to launch the TIP Mechanic Academy in response to the acute shortage of skilled trailer mechanics. This innovative program, initiated across five countries, achieved a significant milestone with the successful graduation of its first class of students in the UK. This inaugural group's achievement not only demonstrated the program’s effectiveness but also highlighted the quality of training provided, setting a positive precedent for future cohorts.
This cutting-edge initiative compresses what traditionally takes three to four years into an intensive nine-month certification process. Designed to expedite the training of mechanics while maintaining high standards, the academy is tailored specifically for rapid yet thorough education in trailer mechanics.
The curriculum, developed collaboratively by Innovam and TIP, blends online learning with practical on-the-job training, providing comprehensive coverage of key trailer maintenance skills. Bernd-Jan de Rooij, Manager International Business Development for Innovam, stated, “The programme we have developed for TIP focuses on a blended approach where, in addition to the combination of online and classroom activities, there is also plenty of room to apply what is learned in practice during daily activities in the workplace.”
The program’s first cohort in the UK marked a successful start, with all ten students achieving their 'Level 3' TIP certification. “After completing the programme, participants can perform preventive and curative maintenance operations, conduct necessary checks and prepare trailers for technical inspection,” said Jan van Vugt, Maintenance & Development Director for TIP.
The certification process is carried out by an independent organization to maintain high standards. Eeske Hanrath, Group Talent Development Director at TIP, noted, “Examination and certification is carried out by an independent and qualified organisation in order to ensure the highest standards of credibility and objectivity in the assessment process.”
Encouraged by the success of the first graduating class, Innovam is eager to see the continuation of this partnership with TIP, which promises to further alleviate the mechanic shortage. Upcoming programs are already scheduled in several countries, with start dates stretching into early 2025.
The TIP Mechanic Academy stands as a testament to Innovam's dedication to advancing education and meeting industry demands through innovative solutions. The success of our first cohort is just the beginning, and we look forward to the continued impact of this program on the global transportation industry.
